Connie's Corner:"On The Road" To Wellness

Ron and I took our 20-year-old, 17-year-old, and our 3-½-year-old out east for vacation in June. It was a mixed bag of vacation events, first stopping off in Lewisburg, PA, my hometown, to see how it’s grown and changed. In many ways, my old hometown is still the same…the same pizza place on Market Street that we all hung out at on Friday nights after the big football game. The same high school, the same swimming pool and ice skating rink. The same ballpark where I threw a soft ball…often times off target. Much had changed though. The last home we lived in is now overgrown and uncared for, and I was surprised by how sad it made me. Something our family took so much pride in was now easily passed by if you weren’t looking for it.

It made me think about how important it is to do regular upkeep on our own bodies, just like we would on our house or our car. It’s as simple as drinking enough water to make sure our “pipes” are running smoothly and having regular annual check-ups with our physician. Feeding our bodies healthful deep green veggies and fruits and staying away from things that would clog our arteries like high fat, deep-fried foods. We wouldn’t use bad oil for our car...we should make sure we take care of our bodies as well as we do our cars…we’d all be running smoothly.

Another thing that came to mind is the importance of time away from the everyday stressors. Getting away with your family to re-connect is so important! When you’re away from the distractions of everyday life you are able to enjoy and discover how much fun it is to be with each other, even if it’s just for the day or a long weekend. Seeing our children delight in the humpback whale arching his back and showing off his tail in Cape Cod brought Ron and I so much joy! Getting back to the basics with your family is what it’s all about, and we encourage you all to take a day for yourself and your family…leave the cell phone at home, and hit the road with your family!
